English Version
As part of the module “Protest Culture: Event, Occasion, Experience” in the Bachelor's program Trends & Identity at ZHdK, a team of five of us designed and organized an event focused on protest culture. In protest against food waste and in the spirit of communal eating, we went on nighttime collection missions and created a solidarity lunch on the roof terrace of the Toniareal. Food is often discarded, and food costs are steadily rising. In recent years, “dumpster diving” has gained popularity as a personal initiative for greater sustainability and less waste. Many supermarket disposal stations are open on the street and often contain food that is still edible. On our excursions, we collected enough bread, vegetables, and even flowers to prepare lunch for over 50 people with just a few additional purchases.
For our event, we designed our own brand identity complete with posters, banners, and placemats. Our guests were invited to linger at decorated tables and color the placemats with crayons. In this way, our restaurant also created a social and communal event that brought together people from various departments of the ZHdK. The name “Klauts” is inspired by the restaurant “Clouds” on the top floor of the Prime Tower. Our event thus positioned itself as the clear opposite of the expensive restaurant on the roof of the Toni Areal, instead of the Prime Tower and with reference to our campaign against food waste.
Our event was a great success and, despite our solidarity-based “pay what you want” concept, we made enough revenue to cover our costs and still donate a large portion, as it was important to us not to work for profit. We were able to achieve our goal of organizing an inexpensive and communal lunch and will most likely continue the project in the future.
